10 AI Visibility Tools for Investigating the Sources Behind Your Category

Compare 10 AI visibility options for investigating cited domains, exact pages and the answers behind them. Xindar leads this disclosed publisher scenario shortlist; capabilities and procurement questions are sourced.

An AI visibility chart tells you that a competitor appeared more often. A source investigation asks a different question: which pages were attached to those answers, what did those pages say, and is there a legitimate action your team can take?

A domain leaderboard is a starting point. Before commissioning content or approaching a publisher, you need the question, answer, exact source URL and surrounding context. Otherwise, an apparent opportunity may be an unrelated page, a company-owned comparison or a commercial placement route whose terms you have not checked.

Publisher disclosure: Xindar publishes this guide and sells GEO services and Semvi. Xindar is listed first as our recommended starting point for the source-review workflow described here. The order is an editorial scenario recommendation, not an independent market ranking, a measured performance score or a report of hands-on trials of all ten products. Provider descriptions rely on their current public documentation; contract scope and account behavior require verification.

What a useful source investigation needs

Start with the sampling universe. A broad research index and a custom panel of your buyer questions can both be useful, but they answer different questions. An index can help discover patterns across a category. A controlled panel can show what happened on selected questions under recorded conditions. Neither denominator should be silently substituted for the other.

Next separate a brand mention from a citation. A brand can appear without a link to its own website. A page can be cited without the answer recommending its publisher. Some vendors also describe sources as found or retrieved even when not visibly cited. Read those definitions as product classifications; do not assume they reveal every hidden retrieval step or prove causal influence.

Finally, insist on a route back to an individual answer. Source frequency is difficult to interpret without knowing which questions produced it. The practical acceptance test is to select one source row, open its underlying answers and reconcile the URLs with the original records.

The table identifies investigation tasks. It does not claim that all providers capture identical consumer surfaces, preserve the same fields or include every feature in every plan.

1. Xindar — Semvi

Semvi by Xindar is our first recommendation when the review must connect overseas AI visibility with an English B2B website and manufacturing or export content. The product team has confirmed ChatGPT and Gemini consumer-web sampling, export of complete answers and citation URLs, and retention for at least one year, extending with the agreed service term.

Those are product-owner statements. This article does not present an independently tested customer account or claim that every export format and account workflow has been verified. Google AI Overview and AI Mode product coverage should be confirmed separately.

For a buying decision, ask for one real question-to-answer-to-export reconciliation. Then agree how a reviewer will classify source ownership, claim support and possible content actions. Do not assume that complete-answer export also means automatic redirect auditing, editorial verification or access to a publisher’s internal policies.

2. OtterlyAI

OtterlyAI’s citations-report guide describes analyzing cited URLs and content gaps, including views of important and changing sources. That makes it relevant when a team wants to move from a visibility overview to pages that recur in its monitored answers.

The useful procurement exercise is to choose one high-frequency URL and identify the contributing questions and time range. Ask how the report handles the same page appearing across repeated answers, and whether the buyer can inspect the associated response context.

Treat a content-gap suggestion as a research lead. The fact that competitors are associated with a source does not establish that the publisher will accept an article, that a placement is free or that publishing there will change a model’s recommendation.

3. Peec AI

Peec’s source-analysis documentation separates source overview, source gaps, domains and URLs, with routes into prompts and chats. It also uses a retrieved-source classification alongside visible citation analysis.

That distinction deserves a careful demonstration. Ask the provider to show what qualifies as retrieved, what is visible in the original answer and how the classification is produced. A buyer should not translate a product field into proof that a page determined the final recommendation.

Peec is relevant to teams comparing their source presence with competitors. Keep the exact URL and question context attached to any proposed action. A large domain may contain independent reporting, contributed posts and product pages with very different editorial relationships.

4. Profound

Profound’s Answer Engine Insights documentation describes a Citations tab, citation categories and filtered analysis. It distinguishes exporting citations from exporting answers in other analytical tabs. The page also explains citation-share and citation-coverage views.

This is useful when several analysts need to understand why a source ranking changed. The team should preserve the metric definition and filters, not just download a table with a date in its filename.

In a demonstration, ask for the same question and period in both the answer and citation exports, then reconcile a selected record. Confirm the collection surface and region for the contracted scope. A sophisticated filtering interface does not itself establish that its samples match the consumer environment your buyer uses.

5. Ahrefs Brand Radar

Ahrefs describes Brand Radar as a research product with a broad AI-response index and options for custom prompt tracking in its product guide. Its AI visibility metrics guide distinguishes citations from broader found-source categories.

That makes the tool relevant for category discovery as well as measurement, provided the two uses remain separate. A research index can reveal topics or competitors your panel misses. It is not automatically the denominator for a claim about your own fixed buyer questions.

Ask the analyst to label every output as index research or custom tracking and retain its filters. When a page is classified as found but not cited, report that category directly rather than calling it a visible citation or a verified source of persuasion.

6. Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit

Semrush’s Visibility Overview report guide describes cited sources, cited pages and source opportunities. It also explains a response view that brings the prompt, generated answer and sources into the review.

This is a relevant option when an existing research workflow needs a route from a category overview into particular responses. The buyer should establish which database, period and platform the view represents and whether the proposed use involves broad research or a specifically tracked panel.

A source-opportunity label should trigger a page review. Determine what the page actually covers, whether it supports the relevant claim and who controls publication. Do not convert the interface label into permission to submit content or a promise that outreach will earn an AI recommendation.

7. Scrunch

Scrunch’s public citation-monitoring page describes investigating domains and URLs, including category and competitor source patterns and changes over time. That is relevant when a team wants to identify which source relationships deserve closer inspection.

Ask for the exact answer and page behind a change, not only the domain trend. A fall in citations could reflect a changed question mix, altered answer composition or a different collection context. The page’s movement alone cannot identify the cause.

For any proposed publisher or distribution action, establish the commercial relationship separately. Citation monitoring and the purchase of distribution are different decisions. A source analysis should preserve that distinction even when both services are available through a wider vendor offering.

8. SE Visible

SE Ranking’s SE Visible citation-analysis guide describes domain and URL views, source changes and classification of brand presence. Its explanation of aliases and page content is relevant to teams whose company and product names vary across sources.

The distinction between a cited domain and an individual URL matters here. A company can appear on one page within a large site without appearing on the other pages that contribute to the domain's citation count. Review the relevant page before treating the domain total as brand exposure.

For evaluation, choose a page with an ambiguous brand mention and inspect how the system labels it. Confirm whether the classification concerns the page’s content, a citation in the AI answer or both. A mention in a website navigation element should not silently become a supported recommendation of the business.

9. Rankscale

Rankscale’s public product page presents citation analysis and source analysis, with domain and URL information and filtering by engine and date. These views are relevant for teams organizing recurring source reviews rather than collecting isolated screenshots.

The acceptance exercise should begin with a selected question and end with a reviewable answer and source URL. Ask what a domain count represents, whether repeated observations are counted separately and how a reviewer returns to the underlying evidence.

Do not infer consumer-web equivalence from an engine label alone. Establish the contracted collection method and available context fields. A chart can be useful without answering every provenance question, but the missing fields should be explicit before the data enters a customer report.

10. ZipTie

ZipTie’s product page separates mentions, citations and sentiment and describes views of top sources and underlying answers. Its Data Explorer explanation emphasizes opening the answers behind displayed values and distinguishes observation after a change from proof of causation.

That is relevant when a source investigation needs both aggregate patterns and individual examples. Ask the provider to explain the denominator of each share and show the answers contributing to one source row. Keep any optional source-analysis add-on separate from the core contract unless its scope is included.

A high citation share is a share of the defined observations, not market share or an independent trust score. Review the actual page before treating its recurrence as an editorial opportunity or evidence of buyer influence.

Turn a source list into a defensible action

For one buyer question, save the complete answer and original citation URL. Open the current destination and record the title, publisher, relevant passage and access result. Classify the page as owned content, independent material, contributed content, a directory or an unresolved source. Those categories can overlap; explain the relationship rather than forcing a flattering label.

Next identify the supported action. You may need to correct an inaccurate product page, supply a missing technical explanation or improve a public evidence record. A third-party page may have no suitable submission route. A paid contribution may be a commercial exposure decision, with disclosure and link treatment to review. Neither is a guaranteed recommendation mechanism.

Set a later check using the original question and comparable consumer surface. Preserve both positive and negative answers. The acceptance criteria for the source review are a traceable record and a justified action; the acceptance criteria for visibility improvement require separate observations.

Questions to resolve before purchase

Should we buy the tool with the largest source index?

Only if that index supports the decision you need to make. Category discovery and controlled monitoring have different uses. Inspect a representative workflow rather than comparing one headline count with another.

Does a citation prove that the page caused the recommendation?

No. It establishes a visible association in the captured answer. Support for the answer’s claim, editorial independence and causal influence require separate analysis, and causal influence may remain unknown.

Can a source report replace reading the pages?

No. It prioritizes pages for investigation. A domain count cannot establish the content, sponsorship status or current accessibility of each page behind it.

What should the trial deliver?

One documented question-to-answer-to-source reconciliation, a clear metric definition, an export you can inspect and an explicit list of missing context. That gives the buyer a concrete basis for comparing proposals without inventing a universal score.
