In 2016, roughly 45% of Google searches ended without the user clicking anything. By mid-2026, that figure was 68.01%. On mobile, it is 77%. Per 1,000 Google searches in the United States, only about 360 clicks now reach the open web — and the European Union's numbers are nearly identical. If your growth model still assumes search traffic scales with search demand, this is the article that explains, with four independent lines of evidence, why it increasingly doesn't.

This one covers what happens to the click itself: how it vanished, how we know, what Google says about it, and the counterintuitive evidence that the clicks which do survive are worth considerably more than the ones that disappeared.
A Decade in Four Data Points
The zero-click trend did not start with AI. It started with Google eating its own results page.

Three details in the 2026 data deserve emphasis. First, the split between devices: 77% of mobile searches end without a click, versus roughly 50% on desktop — meaning aggregate figures understate the shift for any audience that skews mobile. Second, "zero-click" includes clicks that stay inside Google (ads, maps, additional queries); the open web's 360-per-1,000 share is the number that matters to publishers and brands. Third, the curve is steepening: the 2024-to-2026 jump — roughly 8 points in two years — is the fastest two-year change in the decade, coinciding precisely with AI Overviews reaching a large share of queries.
Four Ways to Measure a Vanishing Click — and Why They Disagree
The most common mistake in zero-click commentary is treating one number as the number. In reality, at least five methodologies measure this phenomenon, each with a different lens. They disagree on magnitude. They agree on direction.
1. Clickstream panels (the 68% figure). SparkToro, Similarweb, and Datos infer behavior from large panels of users whose browsing is measured at scale. Strength: enormous sample, real behavior. Weakness: panel composition and attribution assumptions — which is why the 68.01% figure should be read as "roughly two-thirds," not a decimal-precise constant.
2. Browser-level tracking (Pew Research Center, July 2025). Pew took the opposite approach: a small, clean sample measured deeply — 900 U.S. adults with tracking installed, 68,879 real Google queries over March 2025. The findings: users who saw an AI summary clicked a link in 8% of visits; users who didn't see one clicked in 15%. Clicks on links inside the AI summary itself: 1%. And 26% of AI-summary sessions ended immediately, versus 16% without one. A small panel, but methodologically among the cleanest data we have.
3. Keyword-level CTR studies. Ahrefs (April 2025, 300,000 keywords) found the #1 organic result earned roughly 34.5% lower CTR when an AI Overview was present — and its December 2025 re-run of the same methodology put the worst-case drop at up to 58%, a reminder that this is a moving target. Amsive (Lily Ray's team, 700,000 keywords across five industries) found non-brand queries lost -19.98% CTR post-AIO. Seer Interactive measured AI Overview queries falling from 1.76% to 0.61% organic CTR, with paid clicks down 68% on the same SERPs.
4. A randomized controlled experiment. Everything above is observational — correlations between AI summaries and click behavior. In April 2026, the first randomized controlled experiment on AI Overview exposure landed, and it found a -38% causal reduction in organic clicks. Sample sizes in RCTs are smaller than panel studies, but this is the strongest evidence class in the field: assignment, not correlation. The observational estimates of -20% to -58% now have causal backing in the same range.
5. Surveys. Bain-Dynata (December 2024) found 83% of consumers reported not clicking anything on AI Overview queries. Surveys measure perception, not behavior, and people systematically misremember their own clicking. Treat as directional color, not a headline figure.
Put the five together and the honest summary is: zero-click is real, causal, and worsening — but any single number you quote carries a methodology with it, and should be cited with its source and year attached.
Google's Position — and the Measurement Gap That Protects It
Google's public position has been consistent. CEO Sundar Pichai has said that links inside AI Overviews get more clicks; when Pew's study landed, a Google spokesperson dismissed it as built on a "flawed methodology and skewed queryset."
There is a fair point buried in Google's response: panel and tracking studies carry assumptions, and query composition matters enormously (AI summaries appear on 60% of question-format queries but only 8% of one-to-two-word queries, per Pew's own data). But there is also a structural reason this debate stays unresolved: Google Search Console cannot separate AI Overview clicks and impressions from standard results. Publishers literally cannot verify the claim with their own data. When the only party that can measure the full picture is also the party whose advertising revenue benefits from answers that end sessions — and from the "repeat search loop," which grew 7.2 percentage points between 2024 and 2026 as better answers generated more follow-up queries — independent measurement is not a nicety. It is the entire ballgame.
The AI Mode Cliff
If AI Overviews changed the game, Google's AI Mode is currently redefining the worst case. Semrush's September 2025 analysis put AI Mode's zero-click rate at 93%, with a referral rate of just 1.6–2.5% — versus 17–19% for traditional search. Google announced more than one billion monthly AI Mode users at I/O 2026.
Two moderating facts belong next to those numbers. BrightEdge's year-long tracking shows AI Overviews appear on about 48% of queries as of early 2026 — meaning 52% of searches still show no AI Overview at all, and classic results remain the majority experience. And the Reuters Institute's 2026 report — surveying 280 media leaders across 51 countries — found Google search referrals still run roughly 500× ChatGPT's volume (1,300× including Discover). The cliff is real, but we are standing at the top of it, not the bottom.
The Counterintuitive Counterpoint: Fewer Clicks, Better Clicks
Here is where the doom narrative breaks down, because the traffic that does come through AI channels behaves differently — and often better.
AI-referred visitors convert at materially higher rates. Amsive's analysis found an insurance site converting LLM-referred traffic at 3.76% versus 1.19% from organic search, and an ecommerce property at 5.53% versus 3.7%. WebFX reported AI referral traffic up 796% year over year, with visitors described as closer to purchase. Perplexity referrals click through at 6–10× ChatGPT's rate. A user who asks an AI engine a specific question and then clicks through is, by construction, further down the funnel than a user who skimmed ten blue links.
AI recommendations create downstream demand that never shows up as a referral. Similarweb's clickstream analysis (June 2026) tracked what happened after devices saw AI answers recommend financial brands: American Express saw +7.2% direct visits, Capital One +14.2% — users who never clicked the citation, but arrived later by typing the brand's URL. Rand Fishkin's read: AI recommendations behave like outdoor advertising — presence leading to later consumption — which legacy analytics, built to count referral clicks, are structurally unable to see.
And users verify before they buy. Fractl's survey of 1,008 U.S. consumers found trust in AI search recommendations fell from 82% to 54% in a single year, and buyers consult an average of 2.4 platforms before purchasing — with traditional Google still the most-trusted recommendation source (39%), ahead of Reddit (15%) and AI tools (14%). AI answers shape the shortlist; the shortlist then gets checked elsewhere. That is influence without the visit — which is precisely why citation share is becoming the demand-side KPI that CTR used to be.
None of this softens the blow for publishers whose business model is volume: Chartbeat's panel of 2,500+ sites recorded Google organic news traffic down 33% globally and 38% in the U.S. between November 2024 and November 2025, and the Reuters Institute's respondents expect search referrals to fall 43% over three years — one in five fears a decline of more than 75%. But it does change what brands should optimize for. The funnel did not shrink so much as it went dark to standard analytics.
What to Measure When the Click Stops Working
An operating checklist for the zero-click era:
1. Track downstream demand, not just referrals. Direct visits, branded search volume, and type-in traffic are now leading indicators of AI influence. The pattern to watch for is the one Backlinko documented on its own site: impressions +54%, clicks -15%, direct traffic rising — the classic signature of content that AI engines are reading and users are absorbing without clicking.
2. Count citations and mentions as demand-side KPIs. If AI answers shape the shortlist before any click happens, then share of citations in your category's core prompts is the closest thing to a ranking proxy that exists. Measure it in rolling 90-day windows: monthly citation volatility runs at 59.3% for AI Overviews and 54.1% for ChatGPT (Amsive), so single-month deltas are noise, not signal.
3. Instrument what the defaults can't see. ChatGPT referrals arrive with utm_source=chatgpt.com and are measurable in any analytics tool. Google Search Console cannot separate AI Overview traffic — pair it with a monthly prompt panel: a fixed set of 20–50 buyer-relevant prompts, run in clean sessions, scored for mention, citation, and sentiment. It costs an afternoon a month and produces the only trend line you actually own.
4. Win the clicks that remain. Ahrefs found 99.2% of AI-Overview-triggering keywords are informational — the clicks AI answers absorb were disproportionately top-of-funnel research clicks. Transactional, comparison, and "show me the actual thing" intents still click at healthy rates. If your content portfolio is 90% informational, you are competing for the exact clicks that are vanishing.
5. Design for verification behavior. Users check 2.4 platforms before buying. That means the AI answer, your site, and whatever appears when they search "[brand] reviews" need to tell one consistent story — a brand whose claims collapse under the verification step loses twice: once at the AI answer, once at the click that never converts.
The Honest Bottom Line
The click was never the goal. It was a proxy for attention — the best one available for twenty years. The decade of data in this article does not say attention is dying; it says attention is settling into a layer that standard analytics cannot see: read-but-not-clicked answers, shortlists shaped in AI responses, brand names typed into URL bars hours after the AI conversation ended.
The publishers feeling real pain are the ones whose economics depend on click volume. The brands with room to maneuver are the ones whose economics depend on preference — and preference is formed upstream of the click now. Measure accordingly, and build the measurement before you need it, not after the quarterly traffic report makes the case for you.
