“We can hold ±0.01 mm” looks like a precise statement. Without a defined feature, part, process and inspection context, it can still leave a buyer unable to judge whether a factory suits the job.
A drawing requirement, one acceptable measurement and evidence of a repeatable process answer different questions. A machine specification answers another. Putting them under a single heading called accuracy encourages a comparison that the evidence may not support.
For a manufacturer publishing English content for AI-assisted sourcing, the useful task is to explain what the tolerance claim applies to and how a prospective buyer can verify it. Adding more decimal places does not fill the gaps.
Start with the feature the buyer needs
In a hypothetical drawing, a diameter is specified as 10.00 mm with a bilateral tolerance of ±0.01 mm. The stated limits are 9.99 mm and 10.01 mm for that feature. That tells a reviewer what the drawing requires. It does not demonstrate that a particular factory can make the part consistently.
Other characteristics may matter too: geometry, the measurement location, surface condition, material and the operation after which the dimension applies. A statement about a turned external diameter cannot automatically establish the same capability for a deep internal feature or a finished assembly.
The first question for a public capability claim is therefore “which work does this describe?” A defensible page might describe a bounded example or an engineering-review process. It should avoid turning the narrowest value found anywhere in the source material into a factory-wide promise.
Separate four statements that often share one number
| Statement | What it describes | Evidence still needed for a buyer's job |
|---|---|---|
| The drawing calls for a tolerance | A requirement for a defined characteristic | Whether the supplier accepts and can meet it |
| An inspected part was within limits | A result for the inspected item and feature | Whether the result represents the proposed production work |
| A process has documented capability | Variation relative to limits under the studied conditions | Whether those conditions match the new job |
| Equipment has a stated specification | A property described for the equipment | How the complete production and measurement process performs |
This table is an editorial distinction, not a substitute for the buyer's quality plan. It helps a content team ask for the right source before publishing a number.
For example, a brochure may contain a machine manufacturer's positioning specification and a photograph of an inspected part. Neither should be rewritten as a measured capability study for every part made on that machine. Attribute the equipment information to the equipment and the inspection result to the inspected work.
Capability includes spread and centering
NIST describes process capability as a comparison between an in-control process and specification limits. Its conventional capability indices require attention to stability, data and distribution assumptions. Cp compares the specification width with process spread; Cpk also accounts for the process mean's location relative to the limits. These indices should not be presented as universal evidence without their context. NIST process-capability handbook.
Here is a deliberately simplified numerical illustration. Assume a stable, normally distributed process with known standard deviation 0.002 mm and the 9.99–10.01 mm limits above. At a mean of 10.000 mm, Cp and Cpk are approximately 1.67. If the mean shifts to 10.006 mm while the spread stays unchanged, Cp remains approximately 1.67, but Cpk falls to approximately 0.67. The calculation uses Cpk = min((USL − mean)/(3σ), (mean − LSL)/(3σ)).
These are hypothetical population values, not measurements, estimates from a sample, acceptance thresholds or claims about a supplier. The example shows why a statement about spread alone can leave out an important part of the buyer's question.
Inspection needs its own explanation
A measured value also needs a credible measurement process. NIST's measurement-process material treats repeatability, reproducibility, stability, calibration and uncertainty as distinct subjects. Its uncertainty guidance explains why uncertainty matters when deciding whether a result is fit for use. NIST measurement-process overview, NIST uncertainty analysis.
For content review, that creates a useful set of questions. Which characteristic was measured? What method and equipment were used? Does the record identify the part revision? Does it describe the condition of the part and the scope of the inspection? Who is responsible for interpreting the result?
A photograph of a coordinate measuring machine can show equipment is present in a disclosed image. It cannot, by itself, answer those questions. A calibration document also needs to be connected to the relevant measurement task before a marketer describes the result more broadly.
Avoid inventing a universal ratio between instrument resolution and tolerance or applying one Cpk threshold to every industry. The applicable requirements belong in the agreed quality and engineering review. An English marketing page should lead the buyer toward that review with accurate information.
Turn the source pack into a scoped public statement
Begin with the source owner rather than the headline. Ask the manufacturing or quality team which public statements they can support and which evidence may be disclosed. An internally available report is not automatically approved for publication.
A proposed claim record can contain the following:
- The part or product family and characteristic being discussed.
- The material, process stage and other conditions that limit the statement.
- The source document, date and revision.
- Whether the number is a requirement, measured result, equipment specification or capability statistic.
- The person approving its technical meaning and public use.
- The next review date and circumstances that would invalidate the statement.
Keep the public wording proportionate. If the available evidence supports only an example, call it an example. If the business reviews tight-tolerance work individually, explain the information needed for that review. Leaving an unconfirmed value out is more useful than forcing a number into the page for comparison purposes.
This work is related to making manufacturing specifications easier to cite, but the decision here is narrower: what type of evidence does a tolerance number actually represent?
Write the limitation beside the claim
Consider two hypothetical sentences:
“Precision machining to ±0.01 mm.”
“For the approved example shown here, the stated dimensional requirement applies to the identified diameter after machining; other features and finishing stages require drawing review.”
The second is longer because it preserves the relationship between the number and the work. The exact wording should follow the real evidence; this example does not authorize a factory to use that tolerance.
Where several conditions change suitability, a small table may be clearer than a footnote. Keep the characteristic, value, unit, stage and evidence together. Do not place the limitation only in a downloadable document while the main page makes an unconditional promise.
Also review the title, image caption, specification summary and short description. A careful paragraph can be undermined by a card that advertises “all materials, all geometries” or a title that upgrades a typical result to a guarantee.
Audit what an AI comparison preserves
A manufacturer may want an assistant to include it in a supplier shortlist. Inclusion is useful only if the explanation remains accurate. An answer that converts a conditional example into a universal production capability can create the wrong inquiry.
Use a question that reflects an actual qualification decision, without naming the intended supplier. Retain the complete answer and visible sources. Then inspect the exact relationship asserted: did the assistant describe a requirement, an example, a study or a guarantee? Did it preserve the feature and process conditions?
The review should record both a brand mention and any incorrect reason for recommending it. Do not count a misleading technical recommendation as a clean success. Keep the original question fixed during the observation period so that rewriting the prompt does not hide the misunderstanding.
Xindar's manufacturing GEO work can support the organization and publication of approved evidence and the review of sampled answers. Technical acceptance remains with the manufacturer's and buyer's qualified reviewers. Content production is not a dimensional capability test.
Carry the same constraint into the quotation
The website's useful job is to bring a suitable project into a controlled discussion. The handoff should preserve the buyer's feature, units, drawing revision, quantity and process-stage requirements. A generic “send your design” message can lose the very conditions the article explained.
When a buyer asks whether a tolerance is feasible, the reply should identify what has been reviewed and what remains open. If the supplier has assessed a particular revision, a later drawing change should not inherit that assessment automatically.
This is also a maintenance issue. When a source report is withdrawn, a process changes or an example becomes unavailable for public use, identify every page and translated summary that depends on it. A stable URL does not mean the evidence behind its claim remains current.
Questions behind the headline number
Does an acceptable sample prove production capability?
It establishes a result for the inspected sample under its recorded conditions. The proposed production work needs evidence appropriate to its own requirements. A marketing team should not supply the missing conclusion.
Can the same tolerance be stated for every material?
Only if the business has evidence supporting that scope. A broad material list and a separate tight-tolerance example do not establish every combination. Keep the relationship explicit.
Should a public page include a Cpk value?
Only when its meaning, study context, permission and limitations can be explained accurately. A bare value can invite an unfair comparison with a different feature, process or dataset.
Is simpler wording better for AI retrieval?
Readable wording helps a person inspect the claim, but simplicity should not remove conditions that change its meaning. Evaluate whether the resulting summary is correct, rather than optimizing for the shortest possible sentence.
Method and source boundary
The NIST pages above were checked on October 28, 2026. This article proposes a publishing and review method. Its dimensions, process distribution, capability values and sample sentences are hypothetical teaching examples. No factory inspection, engineering approval, customer capability study or independent supplier performance comparison was conducted.
